99% of record labels are crooks

Guten Morgen,

back to business sweet reader.

All the blogosphere "hints" pages tell you not to do this but I have just read a great article written by the guy who produced Nirvana.

I have put a link in so you can read it for yourselves.

Not all of us are on the same road.

Weirdly enough almost exactly the same scenario has happened to us this year and we are a label.
It happened because we trusted Mr Big in the distro chain and he took our pants down and probed the openings like a Navy Seal in Roswell.

Just read it and take note. It's very accurate and is a warning for us all. Indie, musician and dreamer alike.

I don't understand any of that "record jive" but I do know chicken. I just posted a new recipe for cajun ham....and you have to try it. Hammilicious brother! That's about it, oh, except that I am having pizza for dinner. Chicken & onion pizza.

I don't know many that dare to link with the old Speedcat, but it's technoratically correct, right? I'll link if you link?

Have a chickenny day, Speedcat Hollydale :-)

Hi Eugene,
I read the albini blog and I'm not surprised. I have very little experience with the music industry, but it's what 'everyone' says - the music industry is so 'dog eat dog', everyone's out for themselves etc. etc.
So what's the answer? Is being Indie all that different?
I don't know the questions, let alone the answers. I have a producer who wants to pay me to present artists/bands to labels (indie and major). And I have access to hundreds of emerging artists that are all looking for that 'big break' - many of whom would probably happily jump in the shit trough to get it. Some don't see another option.
Is there another option?
I'm not interested in complaining about the majors and how/why they screw people over. I'm interested in helping people achieve their dreams.
By the way, you do have a gift for writing. I enjoy reading your blog!

Hey Julia

thanks.

First of all I'd take the money. You will be one of the few who actually gets paid to do anything with music!

My take on the whole thing is that it depends on personality and perseverence. It's nothing like the hype. If the act has the gumption to sustain itself for a year without help at least there is a chance. Too many dream and do nothing to make dreams real.

Best bet is get a real fan base and work from there before any label looks your way. "Own your home town"

I wish I knew the answers. Really.
I guess in short its a combination of Talent - persistence and being able to open doors so that people know your face.. Get into the back rooms not the flash ones. No one ever got famous by trying to blag into a club. They should have been out back in the alley with the bouncers who can take them to the hotel after the show. Thats where the business is.

Cheers
